Pop goes the cork and clink go the glasses. There’s always a cause for celebration. And, the Summer months are no exception. With weddings, BBQ’s, family reunions and vacations on the horizon, surely, there will be alcohol involved. Cocktails, like Cinderella, are fabulous. Until the clock strikes midnight that is. Can CBD help a hangover? Let’s check it out.
What are the signs of a hangover?
If you’ve ever had too much to drink, you know what a hangover feels like. And, it’s definitely not pretty! You may have even felt so horrible that you vowed to never drink again! The headache, the body aches, nausea, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound and the list goes on. The most common signs of a hangover are:
Dehydration
Even a little bit of alcohol can cause the body to dehydrate. Alcohol is a diuretic. Which is why you have to go to the bathroom so much when you drink. It’s common to run to the powder room several times during a night of drinking. Unfortunately, the body gets rid of much more fluid than it takes in. Those in the know tend to drink one glass of water for every cocktail to balance the fluid loss. But, let’s face it, that’s not fun! Be prepared to be tired, achy, and a bit sluggish.
Inflammation
Alcohol causes inflammation in the body. If you’ve ever woken up after a night out feeling like you were run over by a truck, you can surely relate. Every inch of your body feels sore and achy. And, you probably start wondering what you really did last night. Alcohol is the culprit! It’s responsible for inflammation in the body. And, when the body is inflamed, it can feel terrible. From the tips of your toes to the top of your head, and everything in between, you just feel wrecked.
A Nasty Headache
Dehydration alone can bring on a nasty headache but, when coupled with inflammation you literally don’t want to see the light of day! Whether it’s a dull ache or a sharp throbbing, that debilitating headache, that can reach migraine status, is the number one indicator of a hangover.
Nausea & Vomiting
When we consume too many cocktails, and yes, beer counts, the stomach produces excess acid. The best-case scenario is you’re bloated, have a little gas, and maybe a bit of heartburn. The worst-case scenario is that nausea leads to vomiting and you’re now spending time on the bathroom floor. Never a good look.
Anxiety & Blood Pressure
There have been studies done that link alcohol consumption to an increase in heart rate. When the blood pressure goes up so can your anxiety. Ever hear of drinker’s remorse? It’s that level of anxiousness that drives us crazy the morning after. Or, maybe it’s just that we don’t remember what we were up to!
So, can CBD help a hangover?
CBD is known to provide many benefits. And while the FDA has not evaluated these benefits, the testimonials from CBD users are wonderful. Here are the positives:
- CBD is plant-derived making it a natural alternative to over the counter remedies to fight pain, inflammation and more.
- CBD has been studied for its effects on (1)inflammation and results have been achieved through ingestible and topical forms of CBD. So, it just may help alleviate that overall achy feeling.
- CBD has shown great promise in helping with headache and migraine pain associated with too much drinking.
- When it comes to helping with anxiety, or “drinker’s remorse”, CBD is a great option. There have been studies conducted showcasing the positive effects of CBD on both (2)mood stabilization and (3)anxiety.
- CBD is known to help calm queasiness and settle the stomach. There have been studies suggesting that CBD can help calm the feeling of (4)nausea and perhaps prevent you from vomiting. So, it’s time to get off the bathroom floor!
The best way to avoid a hangover is to avoid drinking! You definitely need to rehydrate by drinking plenty of water, and, by all means, eat something. And while CBD is not a hangover cure it may help alleviate some of the negative side-effects of drinking. More research needs to be done in this area for sure. But hey, if CBD can take the edge off and make you feel a little better after over-indulging, it’s certainly worth a try!

My Mom Is In A Lot Of Pain. So Much Nerve Damage They Had To Remove 3 Disks In Her Neck. Assistance On CBD And Med Interactions, Please!
My mom is taking Januvia, Glipizide, Lantus Injections, and Trulicity Injections. I really think gummies with CBD:THC 100:1 would really help her. Unfortunately, I have heard that diabetes medications might interfere with CBD and vice versa. Does anyone have any experience with interactions with these medications? None of her prescriptions have the grapefruit warning on the labels.
Edited to make corrections.
