The cannabis industry is one of the most attractive growth markets and we believe that it is still in the early innings of a major growth cycle. According to an analyst report from Cowen and Company, the overall market for cannabis and cannabinoid derivatives is expected to reach $34 billion by 2025 and we believe this is a conservative estimate.

Going, forward, the US cannabis industry is positioned to record strong growth under a democratic administration, and we are favorable on the current trend. One of the more interesting trends that we identified is related to the number of celebrities that are launching cannabis brands and are executing on a strategy to capitalize on a burgeoning industry.

From Snoop Dogg to Seth Rogan, several high-profile celebrities were early movers on the cannabis industry, and this is a trend that has become more significant over the last two years. We are favorable on how these celebrities are benefiting from the strength of their respective fan base and will monitor how these brands are able to gain traction.

Today, we want to highlight 3 premium cannabis brands that are backed by a celebrity and provide more insight on how this trend has evolved over the last few years. Although we do not expect every celebrity backed cannabis brand to perform well, we believe these brands are better positioned to be successful over the long-term.

Canopy Growth and Snoop Dogg

In 2016, Canopy Growth Corporation (WEED.TO) (CGC) became one of the first Canadian Licensed Producers (LPs) to launch a cannabis brand that was backed by a celebrity. The agreement was with Snoop Dogg and the brand did not perform as well as expected. Through this venture, we believe that Canopy Growth learned a lot about the challenges that are associated with launching a celebrity backed cannabis brand.

Prior to forming a relationship with Canopy Growth, Snoop Dogg was a well-known cannabis user and activist. Although the agreement with the Canadian LP did not perform well, Snoop Dogg was paid in stock and due to the performance of Canopy Growth, this proved to be a smart decision.

A few years after the agreement was announced, Snoop Dogg launched a cannabis venture capital firm called Casa Verde to make seed and Series A investments in ancillary companies (non-plant touching businesses). One of Casa Verde’s initial investments was LeafLink, a business-to-business marketplace that’s designed to connect cannabis brands with retailers on a single platform. LeafLink is considered to be a high-profile ancillary cannabis company and we are impressed with his ability to identify attractive investment opportunities.

In late 2020, Casa Verde Capital reported to have completed an $100 million financing for its second investment fund (according to documents filed with the SEC). Currently, Casa Verde has not announced any targets for the new venture capital fund, but we expect this to change in the near future.

Martha Stewart Launches a CBD Brand

Martha Stewart is another high-profile celebrity to enter the cannabis industry. Like Snoop Dogg, she entered into an agreement with Canopy Growth that is focused on the cannabidiol (CBD) vertical. The agreement comes several years after the Canadian LP announced the relationship with Snoop Dogg and the relationship with Martha Stewart has already proved to be a value driver for the company.

A few months ago, Canopy Growth announced an important milestone and reported to have released its Martha Stewart CBD Wellness Gummies Sampler. We are favorable on the relationship with Martha Stewart due to the size of her following and will monitor how the brand performs this year.

One of the reasons we consider Martha Stewart to be a strategic partner is related to the demographic of her fan base. We believe that she appeals to the baby boomer generation and expect Canopy Growth to benefit from having leverage to this demographic. So far, the average age of cannabis consumers is younger than Martha Stewart’s fan base and we are favorable on how this further differentiates Canopy Growth from other operators in the sector.

Gage Cannabis and Cookies is an Emerging Growth Story

Gage Cannabis a leading operator in Michigan and has formed an exclusive partnership with one of the best-known cannabis brands, Cookies. The leading cannabis brand was started by California rapper Berner and has a massive following. From the quality of the genetics to the packaging of the finished product, Cookies has been nothing short of an execution story and has a cult-like following.

Last year, Gage opened a Cookies branded flagship cannabis dispensary in the heart of Detroit and we are bullish on this opportunity. The flower that is sold by Cookies is very expensive when compared to other brands and the high price point has not impacted the amount of demand for it.

We believe that Gage Cannabis has the necessary traits to be successful in the cannabis industry and will continue to closely monitor the operation. The company is led by a management team that has a proven track record of success and we are favorable on this aspect of the story. We believe that Gage has attractive growth prospects, a favorable risk-reward profile, and is an opportunity to be aware of.

If you are interested in learning more about celebrities that are forming cannabis brands, please email support@technical420.com with the subject “Celebrity Backed Cannabis Brands” to be added to our distribution list.

Columbia Care Inc.  (OTCQX: CCHWF)  released preliminary results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2020 and issued 2021 guidance. Actual revenue rose 228% in the fourth quarter to $76 million versus $23 million for the same time period in 2019.

While this is a solid performance, it does miss the analyst estimates for revenue of $79 million in the fourth quarter according to Yahoo Finance. The combined results for the fourth quarter are listed as $81 million.

PACT Act to Apply to All Vaping Products

Amendments to the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking (PACT) Act may have caused cannabis to hit yet another setback. The PACT Actt has been amended to include “electronic nicotine delivery systems”, which looks inclusive to cannabis at first glance. However, it’s described as followed:

“any electronic device that, through an aerosolized solution, delivers nicotine, flavor, or any other substance to the user inhaling from the device including an e-cigarette; an e-hookah; an e-cigar; a vape pen; an advanced refillable personal vaporizer; an electronic pipe; and any component, liquid, part, or accessory of a device described without regard to whether the component, liquid, part, or accessory is sold separately from the device.”

This means that USPS can no longer deliver cannabis vape products to consumers.

Well-known hemp CBD company Charlotte’s Web Holdings, Inc.  (OTCQX: CWBHF) is expanding beyond its current model with a planned acquisition of privately-held Stanley Brothers USA Holdings. Stanley Brothers is a cannabis wellness incubator currently operating in three states (Colorado, California, Florida) with expansion plans underway in eight additional states.

The acquisition though isn’t immediate. Instead, Charlotte’s Web is pursuing a five-year option plan valued at $8 million, which could be extended to seven years.

New Jersey Cultivation License

How to Apply for a New Jersey Cultivation License

After years of failed attempts, last month three bills were signed into law, permitting and regulating the use of recreational marijuana in New Jersey, becoming one of the 14 states to legalize the recreational use of cannabis for adults 21 and older.

Right now it’s not possible to buy recreational cannabis anywhere in New Jersey, however, experts say it will be at least six months before the first legal cannabis sale will take place in New Jersey.

So, now it’s the perfect time to start preparing for the endeavor. Take into consideration that the licensing application can be tricky and confusing, that’s why you should always contact a professional to help you with your application.

What is a New Jersey Cultivation License

A Class 1 Cultivator License is a legal document that allows its owner to grow, cultivate, or produce cannabis in the state of New Jersey, as well as sell and transport this cannabis to other cannabis cultivators, or usable cannabis to cannabis manufacturers, cannabis wholesalers, or cannabis retailers but not to consumers.

A cannabis Cultivation License shall be issued by the Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) for the premises at which the cannabis is grown or cultivated.

How to apply for New Jersey Cultivation License

In order to apply for a Class 1 Cultivation License, the applicant must:

  • Apply for a license in the manner described in the latest legislation and the CRC;
  • Have at least one significantly involved person who has resided in this State for at least two years as of the date of the application, and provide proof that this person and any other person with financial interest who also has decision making authority for the cannabis cultivator listed on an application submitted under the legislation is 21 years of age or older;
  • Meet the requirements of any rule or regulation adopted by the CRC;
  • Provide for each of the following persons to undergo a criminal history record background check: any owner, other than an owner who holds less than a five percent investment interest in the cannabis cultivator or who is a member of a group that holds less than 20 percent investment interest in the cannabis cultivator and no member of that group holds more than a five percent interest in the total group investment, and who lacks the authority to make controlling decisions regarding the cannabis cultivator’s operations; any director; any officer; and any employee.

If you need more information about the licensing process, it is recommended that you contact an expert in the field so that you can get the necessary guidance in your endeavor.

About the Grow Canopies for the New Jersey Cultivation Licensees

Pursuant to the latest legislation on the matter, the commission shall adopt rules or regulations restricting the size of mature cannabis plant grow canopies at premises for which a license has been issued to a cannabis licensee. In this sense, when adopting rules and regulations the CRC has to consider whether:

  • Limit the size of mature cannabis plant grow canopies for premises where cannabis is grown outdoors and for premises where cannabis is grown indoors in a manner calculated to result in premises that produce the same amount of harvested cannabis leaves and harvested cannabis flowers, regardless of whether the cannabis is grown outdoors or indoors; or
  • Adopt a tiered system under which the permitted size of a cannabis cultivators’ mature cannabis plant grow canopy may increase or decrease at the time of licensure renewal in accordance with that tiered system, except that the permitted size of a cannabis cultivator’s mature cannabis plant grow canopy may not increase following any year during which the commission disciplined the cannabis cultivator for violating a provision, rule or regulation provided by the legislature; or
  • Take into consideration the market demand for cannabis items in this State, the number of persons applying for a license and to whom a license has been issued pursuant to those sections, and whether the availability of cannabis items in this State is commensurate with the market demand.

New Jersey Cultivation License Restrictions

At this time, the total number of licenses that will be available in New Jersey has not been determined. However, the current legislation limits New Jersey cultivation licenses to 37 over the first 24 months, which includes any alternative treatment centers deemed to be eligible for a New Jersey Cultivation license. However, this limitation does not apply to cannabis cultivator licenses issued to microbusinesses

Further, for a period of 24 months after the effective date of the legislation it is unlawful for any owner, part owner, stockholder, officer, or director of any corporation, or any other person engaged in any retailing of any cannabis items to engage in the growing of, testing of manufacturing of, wholesaling of, or transporting in bulk any cannabis items, or to own either whole or in part, or to be a shareholder, officer or director of a corporation or association, directly or indirectly, interested in any cannabis cultivator.

This basically means that, if you own a cannabis dispensary in New Jersey, you won’t be able to have a controlling interest in any cannabis cultivation operation. Finally, at least 10 percent of the total number of licenses and conditional licenses shall be designated for and only issued to microbusinesses. After the initial period during which the number of licenses is capped, the commission shall review the current number of licenses issued and, provided there exist qualified applicants, the commission shall issue a sufficient number of licenses to meet the market demands of the State of New Jersey.

Sloppy Joes With Coleslaw & Weed

I have absolutely no idea who invented them, but I salute whoever did because they are an all-time fav! Today we’re whipping up some Sloppy Joes With Coleslaw & Weed!

Never had a sloppy joe before? You’re in for a messy but tasty treat!

I have but one rule for this hearty lunch or dinner recipe. Ready?

You MUST make a MESS!

Make mealtime fun, enjoyable, and a total hot sloppy mess and just enjoy the moment with your partner, best-‘bud’, or friends.

What Is A Sloppy Joe?

How can I best describe a sloppy joe to someone who may have never tried it?

It’s a delicious ground beef (or turkey, bison, pork) concoction that is literally ladled onto fresh hamburger buns and eaten in a completely barbaric way!

Add some cheese on top if you like, or not, but either way – it’s so GOOD!

You can also use a fork and knife if you want, but the best way is with two hands and a whole lot of napkins.

Tip: use the freshest buns you can get your hands on! The sloppy joe mixture melts them, and makes everything even better.

buns

Ingredients For Sloppy Joes

  • Cannabis Oil
  • Carrots
  • Onion
  • Celery
  • Garlic
  • Salt
  • Ground beef, turkey, bison, pork – whatever you like best – but for this recipe, I’m suggesting beef.
  • Ketchup
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Worcestershire sauce (I still have no idea how to pronounce this properly!)
  • Red wine vinegar
  • Brown sugar
  • Ground cloves
  • Thyme, Cayenne, Black Pepper
  • Fresh hamburger buns

Can I Freeze The Leftovers?

If you’re a sloppy joe aficionado, you’ll know that there may be leftovers and what to do?

Freeze them my buds, and you can do so for up to 3 months.

Just transfer the cooked and cooled mix to a zip-top freezer bag, lay it flat in the freezer (saves space), and freeze.

When it’s time to reheat, put it in a saucepan with a little water so the meat doesn’t turn up dry, heat it through, and serve again!
