O’Shaughnessy’s The Journal Of Cannabis In Clinical Practice
The former editor of Scientific America and Project CBD co-founder Fred Gardner launched O’Shaughnessy’s in 2003.
O’Shaughnessy’s is a journal, published both physically and virtually, that allows doctors to share medical findings about Cannabis sativa plants like marijuana and hemp.
O’Shaughnessy’s functions to help keep doctors informed about all things cannabis through patient observation reports, new scientific study, and relevant political developments both in the United States and globally.
Mr. Gardner recognized the shortage of information because of conversations with institutions like the Society of Cannabis Clinician Tod Mikuriya, MD (its founder) Martin A. Lee has been associate editor of O’Shaughnessy’s since 2009.

How Many Melatonin Gummies Should I Take?

Many of us need a little extra help in the sleep department from time to time. We have all gone through periods of our lives when we were dealing with overwhelm that got in the way of sleeping a full eight hours each night. Also, overwhelm isn’t the only culprit behind poor sleep. Everything from eating too much sugar to experiencing hormonal fluctuations can disrupt our body’s natural sleep cycle.
There are various medications out there for sleep. However, a natural, holistic option is a melatonin gummy. Melatonin gummies combine cannabidiol with melatonin to gently improve sleep with naturally derived ingredients. If you wish to take melatonin gummies for sleep, finding the right dosage is key. Why? In order to ensure that the formula does its job effectively, of course.
What are Melatonin Gummies?
Melatonin gummies are edibles infused with both hemp extract containing CBD (cannabidiol), and melatonin. Melatonin is a natural sleep promoter that is, in fact, a hormone that the body produces that maintains a healthy sleep cycle. Meanwhile, CBD is a cannabinoid in the hemp plant that regulates important bodily processes by binding to cannabinoid receptors, including ones located in the brain that play a role in balancing brain chemicals that determine our ability to sleep each night.
Melatonin for Sleep
Melatonin has been proven to improve sleep quality and sleep duration. It’s due to the fact that it is simply the hormone that induces sleep, produced in all mammals. Because it is a natural hormone, melatonin has a reputation for being a gentle alternative to more aggressive sleep medications that are prescribed in clinical settings.
When to Take Melatonin Gummies
Before we discuss how many melatonin gummies one should take to have a successful night of sleep, let’s talk about when they should be taken to be the most effective. If they are taken at the wrong time, it does not matter how many gummies you take – they don’t deliver the effects that you were hoping for.
Both CBD and melatonin come in various delivery methods. These include: topicals, tinctures, and capsules. Each delivery method absorbs into the body at its own rate, which is why some take longer to become effective than others. Gummies and all other edibles absorb into the body at the slowest rate. This is because they must first be processed by the gut before activating in the body. Gummies take between one to two hours, generally speaking, to take effect, which is why we recommend taking melatonin gummies about 90 minutes before going to bed.
Another thing to mention about edibles is that they also provide the longest-lasting effects of all of the delivery methods. The exact length of time during which one can feel the effects varies from person to person. You see, each person’s body metabolizes these ingredients differently. But, on average, you can expect the effects to last for about 6 to 8 hours. This can be helpful for those who often find themselves waking up at random times throughout the night.
How Often to Take Melatonin Gummies
It’s also worth pointing out that melatonin gummies can be taken nightly as needed. They’re far less likely to lead to a dependence than commonly prescribed sleep-inducing medications. Of course, due to their sleep-enhancing qualities, they should only be taken at night, as taking them during the day can lead to grogginess and can throw off your sleep cycle as melatonin is only intended to peak at night.
The Ideal Dosage for Melatonin Gummies
Now, we can discuss figuring out how many melatonin gummies to take on a nightly basis. As you will see, it depends on a couple of key factors. But, generally, we recommend that you begin with the suggested dosage that is on the packaging of the product. Companies should always offer instructions about how to use their melatonin gummies, including a clear dosing guide. In most cases, one gummy contains enough of the active ingredients to be generally effective. But you can take more than the recommended dosage if, after two weeks of nightly use, you feel that your body isn’t getting the full effects that you were hoping for.
#1: CBD’s Milligram Strength
CBD is just one of several ingredients in gummies. It can be present in various potency levels, measured by the milligram strength. This number simply reflects the measure of milligrams of pure hemp inside the formula. If a gummy has a low CBD milligram strength, you may find that multiple gummies are needed to get the desired results. The average strength of gummies are 10 to 25 milligrams per piece, depending on one’s unique tolerance to cannabidiol’s effects.
#2: Amount of Melatonin
Most gummy formulas contain either 2.5mg or 5mg melatonin per gummy. So, how much is in the formula selected may play a role in how many you should take. If you need a more heavy-duty formula, 5mg is probably ideal.
What Happens if I Take Too Many Melatonin Gummies?
It’s important to keep in mind that taking too many melatonin gummies can backfire. When there is too much melatonin in the body, it takes longer to clear this hormone out of the system, which can result in you feeling groggy and out of it well into the next day. Higher-than-necessary doses of melatonin can also lead to headaches in some individuals.
Melatonin and CBD Truly Make a Restful Combination
Melatonin gummies are a great choice for someone who wants to explore more natural means for getting a good night’s sleep. They are formulated to enhance sleep gently and can be taken long-term if needed. But, to get as much out of this type of formula as possible, it is good to be mindful of your dosage, as this plays the biggest role in the ultimate results.
Best to try the suggested dosage amount as recommended by the manufacturer and make adjustments as needed after two weeks of consistent nightly use. Also, before taking them, it is also best to consult with your doctor first.
