Cannabis was the talk of the town this week, attracting a Stanley Cup winner to the CBD scene while a Wrigley chewing gum heir chewed on the prospect of going public, a Canadian company eyed supplying QR codes for Europe’s largest CBD maker and a new CBD line focused on pre- and post-workout.

Mark Messier, the Alberta-born, six-time Stanley Cup champion and National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star, is bringing his considerable skills to U.S.-based NXT Water as an equity partner and brand captain for Akeso CBD water.

“The Moose” — a moniker befitting his size, strength and determination during his playing days — and NXT Water jointly announced the partnership. The new pairing will see the former Edmonton Oiler working closely with the company’s executive team on branding, advertising and marketing campaigns, social and digital content, opening up new sales and distribution channels and other initiatives.

Akeso CBD water is a plant-powered drink that offers 10 milligrams of broad-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD and electrolytes in ultra-purified still water. It has no calories, sugar or artificial additives. The company claims that it can help with “reducing inflammation, stress and anxiety, while also supporting mental wellness and workout recovery.”

Messier says he started getting interested in CBD following his retirement from 26 years as a professional hockey player at the highest level.

That level was enough to see the NHL legend hoist the Stanley Cup five times in Edmonton and once in New York. But the rough and tumble of professional hockey also left him with a clear goal of educating himself “on the best natural ways to keep both my mind and body in the best possible condition.”

‘Beau’ Wrigley’s Parallel looks to make a big splash in weed

The announcement is a testament to Parallel’s “unwavering commitment to further developing and enhancing our portfolio of cannabinoid products,” says William “Beau” Wrigley Jr., who will serve as Parallel’s chairman and CEO. /

Privately held, multi-state cannabis operator Parallel and B.C.-based Ceres Acquisition Corporation have entered into a definitive business combination agreement that, if completed, could see Parallel become a public company with an eye on disrupting traditional alcohol and healthcare spaces.

The milestone announcement is a testament to Parallel’s “unwavering commitment to further developing and enhancing our portfolio of cannabinoid products,” says William “Beau” Wrigley Jr., former CEO of the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, which was sold in 2008 for US$23 billion.

Currently, the owner and operator of retail dispensaries in four medical and adult-use markets in the U.S., Parallel’s decision to go public is meant to beef up its U.S. footprint and “improve quality of life through cannabinoids,” notes a statement from the company.

That could advance thanks to the companies’ existing investors, who have committed to a US$225 million private placement should the transaction go through, as well as institutions and private family offices in both the U.S. and Canada. The combined public company could become a reality this summer.

Specifically, the transaction would see Ceres acquire Parallel at an implied enterprise value of US$1.884 billion. Once approved, the deal will enable Parallel to ramp up existing investments and disrupt the more traditional beverage alcohol and healthcare spaces.

Vancouver-based Global Cannabis Applications Corporation (GCAC), a medical cannabis chain-of-custody compliance provider, could be teaming up with Europe’s largest CBD producer to supply QR codes for its retail packaging in a $400,000 deal.

GCAC and CBD Agrocasa have signed a memo of understanding for a transaction that would see the former supply Efixii QR codes on retail packaging of the former. The proposal envisions codes being applied “to an initial retail rollout of 400 litres of CBD oil tinctures, containing approximately 2 million grams of cannabis, at a SaaS (software as a service) licence cost of $0.20 per gram,” notes GCAC, whose focus is data optimization of medical cannabis research and production.

Should the initial data collection be successful, “both parties agree to work in good faith to expand the commercial use of Efixii across Agrocasa’s harvests in the future.”

The QR codes use blockchain to ensure the truth of CBD claims by cultivators and is expected to help Agrocasa plan strain cultivation.

Beyond providing seed-to-sale information, GCAC calls its platform the only one in the world “that then acquires actual user-efficacy data on CBD consumption using its Efixii app, now available on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store.”

The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (TGOD) reports that its wholly-owned European subsidiary, HemPoland, is launching a line of hemp-derived CBD supplements for professional and recreational athletes to use before or after workouts.

With the expanding health and wellness trend alive and well, the new offerings will be included under the CannabiGold Sport portfolio, notes a TGOD statement. Available in glass packaging for longer shelf life and product integrity, each bottle features an easy-to-use pump dispenser for precise dosing.

CannabiGold Sport oils come in five different formulations — each tailored to different stages of training — with each one containing different plant-derived ingredients and vitamins, and pure CBD in coconut MCT oil.

Specifically, the oils are called Boost, Focus, Recover, Relax and Pro. The first four include 250 mg of pure CBD, while Pro, designed for professional athletes, has “2,500 mg of pure CBD” and is “compliant with the World Anti-Doping Agency’s regulations.”

The new line will initially be distributed in Poland, Germany and the U.K.
