Jul 5, The 14 tools needed to build a concrete slab – How to form and pour it
On this page I tell you the 14 must have tools you need to build a concrete slab. I’ll show you which ones you need to form the slab and which tools you need to pour the concrete slab. I will also have a FREE downloadable pdf that lists all the tools for you
If you’re thinking of installing a concrete slab, you’ve found the right page. I’m going to show you the 14 tools needed to build a concrete slab.
You’ll need some of these tools to form the slab and some to pour the concrete for the slab.

My name is Mike Day, owner of Day’s Concrete Floors, Inc.
My company installs concrete slabs for homeowners, builders, and foundation contractors.
I’ve been in the concrete business for over 35 years and have built a lot of concrete slabs in that time.
My crew and I use the same tools over and over again to build these concrete slabs. We’ve figured out the fastest and most accurate way to form the slab and to pour the concrete for the slab.

THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO BUILD THE FORMS
These are the tools we use to build the forms. We like to screw our forms together. You can use a hammer and nails if you want to.
- Dewalt drill driver – it’s faster than hammering nails and holds the forms together better
- 2 Pound sledge hammer – for driving in the stakes
- Laser Level & Grade stick – for setting the forms to grade
- String line – for straightening the boards
- Tape Measure – for measuring lengths and squaring the forms
- Pencil – for marking measurements
- Forming Stakes – to secure the forms in place
A couple other things you will need to build the slab frame that aren’t tools are the deck screws (or 16D nails) and the wood forms (2×4’s, 2×6’s, 2×8’s, use whatever board you need).

THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO POUR THE CONCRETE SLAB
Once the forms for the concrete slab are built and set to grade, you’re ready to install the concrete.
Here is the list of tools you need to place the concrete:
- Concrete screed or straightedge
- A bull float – for smoothing the concrete
- Kumalong or concrete rake – for pulling and pushing the concrete in place
- Mag float – for smoothing the edges
- Concrete boots – I know, not really a tool but you need them
- Gloves – concrete will burn your skin, you need to protect them
- Laser level, Tripod & Grade stick – to make sure the middle of the slab is level with the top of the boards
One other thing you may need – it’s optional – is a concrete chute if the truck chutes can’t reach as far as you need to or maybe even a wheelbarrow.

I’ll teach you how – Take my course
If you’ve never formed and poured a concrete slab you really should take my course:
How to form and pour a concrete slab like the pro’s do.
In the course I break down all the necessary steps to successfully form the slab and then how to pour the concrete.
When you pour a concrete slab there is no room for mistakes. One mistake could cost you hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars.
Concrete is not easy to fix after it hardens.
My course will explain to you in a video format how to easily set up the forms and prepare them for the pour.
Then I will show and tell you all my secrets on how we pour concrete slabs. It’s well worth the investment.

Feb 16, Concrete Yardage Calculators – How Much Do I Need For Any Type of Job
Find the perfect concrete calculator to figure cubic yardage (and cubic meters) for any type of concrete project. Floors, slabs, walls and much more.
Calculate concrete cubic yardage for slabs, walls, footings, columns, stairs, blocks, curbs, and gutters using the many different concrete calculators on this page.
Estimate the volume and weight of concrete you’ll need for any given area.
Figure out how many cubic yards of concrete you need in both US units of measure (feet and inches) and International system of units or metric units (meters and centimeters) of measurement.
LEARN HOW TO INSTALL YOUR OWN CONCRETE SLAB HERE!
The best way (and fastest way) to calculate concrete yardage is using a concrete calculator.
These concrete calculators are very accurate and will help you determine the volume of concrete you need for the type of project you’re doing.
Always add a little extra to the quantity estimated just to be on the safe side.
Rarely is any concrete project perfect and you don’t want to be left short on the amount you need.
You’ll be able to calculate concrete cubic yardage, weight, and how many bags you need for:
- Concrete slabs
- Concrete Walls
- Concrete Footings
- Circular slabs or Tubes
- Columns or Sono-tubes
- Concrete Curbs and Gutters
- Concrete stairs
Concrete calculator formula for a slab or floor
If you want to use a formula to calculate concrete volume, I have a whole page like the picture above that shows you a written formula for:
- Square or Rectangular Slabs
- Round Slabs
- Concrete Walls
- Concrete Footers
- Square Columns
- Round Columns
- Concrete Stairs and Steps
- Concrete Curbs and Gutters
Concrete calculators for specific applications
Use the concrete calculators below to help you determine concrete yardage for your specific project.
Use the calculators above for estimating purposes only.
Always double check your calculations when you figure concrete for a project. Not having enough concrete to finish can be both frustrating and problematic.
Concrete is made from aggregate (stone), sand, cement, and water.
You can make your own concrete using the raw materials and my concrete mixing ratio formula or you can buy pre-mixed concrete in bags that you just add water to.
For large projects, ordering concrete from a ready mix concrete company is usually easier and faster.
Learn how to do your own concrete slab by taking my concrete slab course.
The concrete calculator APP for the Iphone and Android smartphone is terrific! I use it daily. The free desktop download is courtesy of Meet-Mr-Concrete.
Learn how I check the sub-grade to find the average thickness of a concrete floor on either the floors or slabs calculator page.
When I order concrete from a ready mix company, I always add 1/2 to 1 yard more than what it says on the calculator.
