Below I’ll list the tools and supplies you need to make a concrete countertop. It’s important to have the right tools to make your job easier.

There’s a lot of different techniques the pros use but I’ll just keep it simple and list the basic stuff. If this is your first time making a concrete countertop I would definitely consider having the tools below before you start.

Tools and materials for forming a concrete countertop

This rubber edge from will give you a finished edge on your countertop that looks like stone. The manufacturer has many different textures to choose from. The form is 2 inches high and 8 feet long. You can cut it to length.

This is one of the drills we use to screw the forms together.

We also use the impact driver but this one will do everything you need. Make sure you pre-drill the holes before you screw, this eliminates cracking the forms.

Put a little Vaseline over the screw head to keep any spilled concrete from sticking to it.

These are the sink knockouts you use to make holes in your countertop for the faucet and hot & cold water handles.

We use black caulking and a smoothing tool to caulk the corners and edges of the forms after they are screwed together.

This provides a nice smooth edge when you strip the forms.

Get the caulk bead finishing tool on Amazon also.

FORMS – We use melamine 4×8 sheets for forms and cut them to size. Melamine has a very smooth surface which makes polishing that surface much easier. You can get this at your local lumber company. You could also use smooth finished plywood although you may see some of the wood grain in the surface of the concrete after you strip the form.

Tools and materials used for mixing concrete countertop mix

This is the kind of mixer we use. You can use a 1/2 inch drill or just mix the concrete in a wheelbarrow.

This mixer is just a lot faster and makes mixing the concrete very easy.

This is the mixing tub we use. You can easily mix an 80lb bag of Quikrete in this tub with the drill mixer.

When you’re done, just rinse it out and use it over and over again.

Bag Concrete countertop mix for making a concrete countertops

This bag is a “just add water” concrete mix for making concrete countertops.

The amount of bags you’ll need depends on how thick your countertop is and how many square feet it is.

This bag from Cheng concrete countertop mix contains a color pigment, superplasticizer, and fibers.

You just add it to a 80lb bag of Quikrete 5000 or Sakrete HIgh Strength Concrete Mix.

You can make your own countertop mix from scratch. Here’s my list of ingredients you will need.

Tools and materials for polishing a concrete countertop

This polishing kit includes the polisher and all the polishing discs you need.

To learn more about how to use a concrete polisher and finish your concrete countertop click HERE.

This is what you use to fill any voids and pin-holes after you polish up to a 400 grit.

Just mix the slurry and rub it into the voids using rubber gloves. Choose the color that best matches your concrete.

Scrape off the excess with a plastic putty knife, then let it dry overnight and continue polishing.

For some more information and a video about polishing, check out my page about finishing concrete countertops.

Tools and materials for sealing a concrete countertop

This is a food-safe topical acrylic sealer, not a penetrating sealer.  If your concrete is NOT highly polished and somewhat porous, this is a good sealer for you.

This will cover 45 – 60 sq. ft. per bottle and you will apply at least 3 coats. You can also order the gallon container if you want.

This is a food-safe penetrating concrete sealer for countertops.

It penetrates deep into the concrete and doesn’t leave a film on the surface.

It’s better for more polished surfaces.

This kit includes a food-grade daily cleaner, protective wax, buffing pad, and a micro-fiber towel to clean and maintain your concrete countertop.

how to apply concrete countertop sealer

Here’s a video showing you how to apply the sealer.

How is Sand Used in the Construction Industry?

Contrary to popular belief, there are several different forms of sand on this earth.  Some are engineered for specific construction purposes, and others are completely natural.  Sand has been used for many different purposes since the beginning of time, and is especially useful to the construction industry for many reasons.  Sand uses in the construction

Feb 16, Concrete Yardage Calculators – How Much Do I Need For Any Type of Job

Find the perfect concrete calculator to figure cubic yardage (and cubic meters) for any type of concrete project. Floors, slabs, walls and much more.

Republished by Plato

Calculate concrete cubic yardage for slabs, walls, footings, columns, stairs, blocks, curbs, and gutters using the many different concrete calculators on this page.

Estimate the volume and weight of concrete you’ll need for any given area.

Figure out how many cubic yards of concrete you need in both US units of measure (feet and inches) and International system of units or metric units (meters and centimeters) of measurement.

Concrete calculator

LEARN HOW TO INSTALL YOUR OWN CONCRETE SLAB HERE!

The best way (and fastest way) to calculate concrete yardage is using a concrete calculator.

These concrete calculators are very accurate and will help you determine the volume of concrete you need for the type of project you’re doing.

Always add a little extra to the quantity estimated just to be on the safe side.

Rarely is any concrete project perfect and you don’t want to be left short on the amount you need.

You’ll be able to calculate concrete cubic yardage, weight, and how many bags you need for:

  • Concrete slabs
  • Concrete Walls
  • Concrete Footings
  • Circular slabs or Tubes
  • Columns or Sono-tubes
  • Concrete Curbs and Gutters
  • Concrete stairs

Concrete calculator formula for a slab or floor

If you want to use a formula to calculate concrete volume, I have a whole page like the picture above that shows you a written formula for:

  1. Square or Rectangular Slabs
  2. Round Slabs
  3. Concrete Walls
  4. Concrete Footers
  5. Square Columns
  6. Round Columns
  7. Concrete Stairs and Steps
  8. Concrete Curbs and Gutters

Concrete calculators for specific applications

Use the concrete calculators below to help you determine concrete yardage for your specific project.

Use the calculators above for estimating purposes only.

Always double check your calculations when you figure concrete for a project. Not having enough concrete to finish can be both frustrating and problematic.

Concrete is made from aggregate (stone), sand, cement, and water.

You can make your own concrete using the raw materials and my concrete mixing ratio formula or you can buy pre-mixed concrete in bags that you just add water to.

For large projects, ordering concrete from a ready mix concrete company is usually easier and faster.

Learn how to do your own concrete slab by taking my concrete slab course.

The concrete calculator APP for the Iphone and Android smartphone is terrific! I use it daily. The free desktop download is courtesy of Meet-Mr-Concrete.

Learn how I check the sub-grade to find the average thickness of a concrete floor on either the floors or slabs calculator page.

When I order concrete from a ready mix company, I always add 1/2 to 1 yard more than what it says on the calculator.
