If you are like most people, your understanding of CBD and CBN starts and ends with knowing that they relate to cannabis. This article will go into detail in explaining what these abbreviations stand for, and the difference between the two:

CBD and CBN: The Similarities

A look at the meaning of the abbreviations and the similarities is an excellent prelude to any discussion on the differences. CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, while CBN is cannabinol abbreviated. The two are among the many chemical compounds also known as cannabinoids found in cannabis.

There is also a similarity in how these molecules work. Alongside other cannabinoids, CBD and CBN will be introduced into your bloodstream when you consume, in any way, a cannabis product. These chemical compounds will be transported through your bloodstream to various parts of your body and brain.

The molecules interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) in any one or more of several ways resulting in the wide range of effects characteristic of cannabis consumption. Cannabinoids activate different neurons to produce different effects.

CBD Vs CBN: A Look at the Differences

1. Formation

CBD is a derivative of another cannabinoid, THC. It is what is left from the breakdown of THC in the process of decarboxylation. This cannabinoid is available at significant levels in most marijuana strains and industrial hemp plants.

CBN is also a degradant of THC, forming after the breakdown of THC when exposed to light and heat. How much CBN there is in any cannabis flower or concentrate will depend on the age of the flower, and the amount of UV and heat exposure. CBN is only found in the buds and flowers of fully matured and aged cannabis plants. As such, young plants that have not yet blossomed do not contain this cannabinoid.

In reiteration and putting it succinctly, there is only one way to form CBD, but there are two to form CBN. Decarboxylation produces both CBD and CBN. On the other hand, aging will only produce CBN.

2. Psychoactive Element

CBD is non-psychoactive. This means that CBD will not give you a high. On the other hand, CBN is mildly psychoactive, with these effects being nowhere near the high you’d get from THC. Generally, you will only experience the psychoactive effects of CBN if you take it in large doses. This is because the molecule is derived from aged THC.

3. Benefits

Both CBD and CBN have proven to have medicinal benefits, mostly in pain management. Ointments, balms, and tinctures with these molecules are great for relieving inflammation, muscle soreness, and soothing joint pain.

There are, however, some significant differences between CBD and CBN in the following areas:

4. Appetite Stimulation

CBD acts as a hunger suppressant and will leave you feeling less hungry. This effect is of benefit to the obese and anyone looking to lose a bit of weight.

On the other hand, CBN acts as an excellent appetite stimulant. This benefit is a great help to anyone with a medical condition that interferes with their ability to gain or maintain weight. This includes cancer treatments going through chemotherapy since the treatment tends to affect their appetite negatively.

5.     Sleep

Sleep is tied to the psychoactive effects, or lack thereof, of these cannabinoids. While both are a good pick for people with insomnia, there is a difference in how much is needed to produce the desired sedative effect.

Thanks to it being inherently psychoactive, CBN produces a sedative effect even at low doses. Studies have gone ahead to suggest that out of all the cannabinoids, CBN, even in small doses, produces the most potent sedative effect.

On the other hand, CBD is not of much use to people who have trouble sleeping in low doses.to get better sleep, you will need to up the dosage before you can get the desired sedation effect. As a plus, CBD has been shown to improve alertness during the day after a good night’s sleep.

6.     Getting High

Getting high with recreational use of marijuana can help to reduce anxiety, calming you down. The high can be a great stress reliever.

If you are looking to get high, CBD won’t cut it since it does not have psychoactive properties. CBD on the other hand can give you that high, although it is not as potent as THC.if you are looking for the ultimate high experience, you need THC.

Final Thoughts

CBD and CBN are similar in that they are both chemical compounds in cannabis. Both have benefits in pain relief.

On the other hand, differences between the two cannabinoids are apparent in their origin, their psychoactive properties, or lack of, and the way they affect sleep and appetite. Book an appointment with MmjDoctor to get your medical marijuana card to avail of the benefits of CBD and CBN fully.

My doc is ant-cannabis she sees no medicinal value in cannabis. I don’t smoke weed and that’s the only med I’m taking. Thought maybe some other people in a similar situation could give me some info. I know it’s metabolised by the same enzyme I don’t want a build up of Abilify although with a so low dose does it matter is my question?
