The endocannabinoid system and mental balance

The endocannabinoid system is closely related to our mental health. For example, it regulates our appetite, mood and inflammation in our body. If the endocannabinoid system becomes unbalanced, it can lead to pain, a weakened immune system, mood swings, anxiety and depression.

How CBD and the ECS work together

CBD interacts with two important receptors of the endocannabinoid system, the CB1 and the CB2 receptor. CB1-receptors are mainly found in the central nervous system while CB2-receptors are mainly found in immune-system relevant areas and in the digestive tract.

When CBD is absorbed into the body, it docks into the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are then activated. By activating these receptors, the whole endocannabinoid system is set in motion and can act where it is needed.

For anxiety disorders it is assumed that the balance of special messenger substances (including e.g. serotonin, which is considered a mood enhancer) is disturbed. Antidepressants or other drugs inhibit the breakdown of these substances, so that the serotonin level in the brain rises and the mood is improved. 

CBD also has a similar effect: CBD can bind to a receptor in the central nervous system and thus have an anxiety-relieving effect. This has already been sufficiently proven by various studies, including one by the New York University School of Medicine.
