CBD Oil for
Pets: What You Should Know
Have you heard the
hype about CBD oil and its use for pets? If you spend any time on the internet,
then you most likely have heard about CBD oil for pets, and you may be
wondering what it is and if it actually works in dogs and cats. With a little
research, you’ll find that while the benefits of CBD in humans and animals is
very well established. But how do we
know that it works for our furry friends?
What Is CBD?
CBD is short for
cannabidiol, which is a naturally occurring compound derived from hemp. Science
has identified more than 140 naturally occurring cannabinoids, and these
compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system in humans and
animals—including your pets. You can see
our top recommended products
here.
Cannabinoid receptors
function to maintain homeostasis (a stable environment) in the body, and they
are located throughout the body and brain. These receptors are involved in
everything from pain, mood and anxiety to appetite, inflammation and immunity.
CBD found in hemp can help stimulate these receptors.
What Is CBD Oil Used For?
In humans, CBD has
been shown to help with anxiety, inflammation, nausea, mental disorders,
chronic pain, mood disorders and seizures, arthritis and fibromyalgia as well
as being neuroprotective at higher doses. At lower doses, CBD promotes health
through antioxidant properties. As an example, in humans, CBD is a more effective antioxidant
for the brain than vitamin C or E, and it can help with acne.
In pets, CBD oil has
shown to reduce inflammation, increase appetite, reduce arthritis and help with
hip dysplasia and cancer.
CBD Oil for Pets: Helpful or Hype?
There are some recent
studies that indicate giving pets CBD oil is helpful in certain circumstances.
Dr. Joe Wakshlag,
DVM, PhD, DACVN, DACVSMR, associate professor and section chief of nutrition at
Cornell University’s veterinary school in Ithaca, New York, recently completed
a study showing that CBD oil does help dogs
with chronic pain from osteoarthritis; the results of the study indicated that
there was a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity for the dogs
participating in the study.
There also are plans
to study the effect of CBD oil in cats with chronic pain, acute pain in dogs,
behavioral issues in dogs and concurrent use of CBD oil with chemotherapy in
canine cancer patients. Cornell also has a CBD safety study in cats that almost
is completed.
Another study, conducted by Colorado State
University’s veterinary school and published in June, found that CBD oil helps
dogs suffering from epilepsy. Many people also use CBD oil to control seizures
in their dogs. Many dogs and cats cannot tolerate the side effects of conventional
drugs to control seizures and many continue to have seizures while on
prescription medication. We have seen
instances where people decide to stop the seizure medications and start giving their
pets CBD oil instead. At a follow-up appointments, in many instances, the pet
was seizure-free and doing very well without the prescription medications and
by just taking the CBD oil.
But again, at the moment, much of the evidence in support of CBD oil for pets is anecdotal so be sure to consult with your personal Vet.
Dr. Fred Metzger,
DVM, MRCVS, DABVP, owner of Metzger Animal Hospital in State College,
Pennsylvania, and adjunct professor at University of Pennsylvania School of
Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia, reports that more than 100 dogs at his
hospital are being given CBD oil for chronic pain with osteoarthritis, and his
team is witnessing positive results.
Pet parents have also
seen what pet CBD oil can do for their four-legged companion.
Here are a couple of
success stories:

Many dog
owners are loving how well CBD works for relieving pain.
Coco is a
3 year old Old English Mastiff. She has hip dysplasia and arthritis. She was in
a lot of pain. She was also on 300mg of a pain medication called Tramadol which
was making here “spaced out”.
Because
the surgery costs were too high, her owners started giving her CBD oil…
Within
just 4 weeks, she’s become a totally different dog! She’s in less pain, and is
experiencing no side effects.
“Maverick was diagnosed with lymphoma 2 years
ago and was not expected to make it 6 months,” Alicia says. “Between the cancer
and terrible arthritis in his back, my beautiful boy wasn’t eating and stopped
playing fetch.”
After doing some
research, she began giving Maverick CBD oil to help relieve his pain.
“I began to see my
boy come back,” Alicia says. “I am happy to say we are going on 2 years to the
vet’s disbelief and he is back to eating and playing as he always had … My
family truly believes he is doing as well as he is because of the CBD and we
will recommend it to all in a similar position.”
Lauren F. from
Queens, New York, also gives her dog, Jay, CBD oil for pain relief.
“Jay was hit by a car
when he was 4 months old and has metal pins in his right hind leg,” Lauren
says.
Some days his leg
would bother him so much that he wouldn’t want to play, she adds. Jay took some
medications for pain relief but had to stop because he was allergic to some of
the ingredients in the medicine. They tried physical therapy and other
treatments that the vet recommended, but nothing seemed to help improve his
overall wellness. On top of that, he was dealing with severe separation
anxiety.
For Jay, CBD oil
seemed to be the best solution.
“CBD did not sedate
Jay, but brought him back to normal,” Lauren says. “It has been a true miracle
for his health and my sanity.”
Pet CBD Oil vs. Marijuana
A common
misconception is that CBD oil is derived from marijuana and can get your pet
high. This is a myth. CBD oil comes from industrial hemp. While CBD oil for
pets may contain trace amounts of THC (the compound in marijuana that gives the
intoxicated feeling), it is not enough to cause any mental changes.
Before trying any CBD
oil pet product, I recommended checking the label to make sure it is THC free
because THC is toxic to dogs. Better safe than sorry!
Giving Your Pet CBD Oil
Many companies now
make CBD products for pets, so you can choose from several forms, including
oils, chews and treats. CBD is considered safe with few, if any, side effects,
though some animals may experience upset stomach.

Abstract
In this contribution, a comprehensive study of the redox transformation, electronic structure, stability and photoprotective properties of phytocannabinoids is presented. The non-psychotropic cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), cannabichromene (CBC), and psychotropic tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) isomers and iso-THC were included in the study. The results show that under aqueous ambient conditions at pH 7.4, non-psychotropic cannabinoids are slight or moderate electron-donors and they are relatively stable, in the following order: CBD>CBG≥CBN>CBC. In contrast, psychotropic Δ9-THC degrades approximately one order of magnitude faster than CBD. The degradation (oxidation) is associated with the transformation of OH groups and changes in the double-bond system of the investigated molecules. The satisfactory stability of cannabinoids is associated with the fact that their OH groups are fully protonated at pH 7.4 (pKa is ≥ 9). The instability of CBN and CBC was accelerated after exposure to UVA radiation, with CBD (or CBG) being stable for up to 24 h. To support their topical applications, an in vitro dermatological comparative study of cytotoxic, phototoxic and UVA or UVB photoprotective effects using normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and keratinocytes (HaCaT) was done. NHDF are approx. twice as sensitive to the cannabinoids’ toxicity as HaCaT. Specifically, toxicity IC50 values for CBD after 24 h of incubation are 7.1 and 12.8 μM for NHDF and HaCaT, respectively. None of the studied cannabinoids were phototoxic. Extensive testing has shown that CBD is the most effective protectant against UVA radiation of the studied cannabinoids. For UVB radiation, CBN was the most effective. The results acquired could be used for further redox biology studies on phytocannabinoids and evaluations of their mechanism of action at the molecular level. Furthermore, the UVA and UVB photoprotectivity of phytocannabinoids could also be utilized in the development of new cannabinoid-based topical preparations.

Inhalation by vaporization is a useful application mode for medical cannabis. In this study, we present the disposition of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), their acidic precursors, and their metabolites in serum, oral fluid, and urine together with the acute pharmacological effects in 14 healthy individuals treated with vaporized medical cannabis. THC and CBD peaked firstly in serum and then in oral fluid, with higher concentrations in the first biological matrices and consequent higher area under the curve AUCs. Acidic precursors Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) showed a similar time course profile but lower concentrations due to the fact that vaporization partly decarboxylated these compounds. All THC and CBD metabolites showed a later onset with respect to the parent compounds in the absorption phase and a slower decrease to baseline. In agreement with serum kinetics, THC-COOH-GLUC and 7-COOH-CBD were the significantly most excreted THC and CBD metabolites. The administration of vaporized medical cannabis induced prototypical effects associated with the administration of cannabis or THC in humans, with a kinetic trend overlapping that of parent compounds and metabolites in serum. The pharmacokinetics of cannabinoids, their precursors, and their metabolites in biological fluids of individuals treated with vaporized medical cannabis preparations showed a high interindividual variability as in the case of oral medical cannabis decoction and oil. Inhaled medical cannabis was absorbed into the organism earlier than decoction and oil. Cannabinoids reached higher systemic concentrations, also due to the fact that the acid precursors decarboxylated to parent cannabinoids at high temperatures, and consequently, the physiological and subjective effects occurred earlier and resulted with higher intensity. No serious adverse effects were observed.
