A man who allegedly drove an Audi through Dunedin’s main shopping street at almost 100kmh and later avoided road spikes is still on the run.

Police are searching for Rory Smyth after an incident in Dunedin on Thursday morning.

Smyth, who is subject to parole conditions after being released from prison last year, sparked a police pursuit when he allegedly drove his dark coloured Audi down Stuart St and then George St.

Police estimated he reached speeds of just under 100kmh in the 30kmh shopping area, with officers abandoning the pursuit.

An attempt was made to spike his vehicle at Evansdale, just north of Dunedin, with Smyth allegedly evading spikes and crashing into a truck before fleeing the scene.

Acting Senior Sergent Anthony Bond said Smyth has links in the Dunedin and Waikouaiti area, and should not be approached.

Smyth went on the run in 2012, after the armed robbery of an Auckland nightclub.

During the robbery, tens of thousands of dollars were stolen by the shotgun-weilding perpetrator.
