The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) has submitted a £75 million public and private sector funded bid to speed up the decarbonization of the UK’s Humber region, reportedly the country’s most carbon intensive industrial region.

The Zero Carbon Humber (ZCH) Partnership, which incorporates 11 local companies and associations, aims to create the world’s first net zero industrial cluster by 2040 by using low carbon hydrogen, carbon capture and negative emissions.

Plans are to establish a pipeline network to carry hydrogen to industrial customers and carbon dioxide from power generation and industrial emitters to permanent storage in an offshore aquifer below the seabed in the UK’s southern North Sea, the AMRC said. According to the center, Zero Carbon Humber could reduce the UK’s annual emissions by 15% and save around £27.5 billion in carbon taxes by 2040.
