Kryton is pleased to announce that the company’s very own CEO, Kari Yuers, has been appointed to the Council of Governors for the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade (GVBOT).

Kari was elected to the board in 2015 and served in several positions over the years. Most recently, she served as chair of the organization from 2019 to 2020.

At the start of her term in November 2019, Kari had laid out three key goals she wanted to dedicate the efforts of the board to. Those were the continued building of Greater Vancouver’s competitive advantage, championing gateway infrastructure, and supporting collaboration and relationship-building with others to support economic growth.

Those goals didn’t change when the pandemic hit. Instead, they became even more critical to the survival of the Greater Vancouver business community, which the GVBOT rallied to support. Working together under Kari’s direction, the GVBOT advanced a great number of initiatives. Those included the creation of the economic recovery plan to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on local businesses, the launch of the Scale-up Centre for SMEs to help high-potential firms overcome barriers to growth, and transforming the Women’s Leadership Council to the Diversity and Inclusion Council to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion and to enhance business innovation.

“I am honored to have served as Chair of the Board of Trade, particularly through such challenging times. When I laid out my mandate, I spoke about the importance of building off our strengths and embracing technological change and innovation,” said Kari. “I am inspired by the resilience and grit that the members and staff of the GVBOT have shown over the past year. I look forward to continuing to serve the business community as a member of the Council of Governors and working together to strengthen the community further.”

Kari was inducted to the Council of Governors on April 7 at the virtual 2021 Governors’ Gala and Rix Awards ceremony. As last year’s gala was canceled due to the pandemic, the GVBOT also celebrated the appointment of Lori Mathison to the Council of Governors in 2020.

Understanding the two techniques

When it comes to concrete coloring, there are two main techniques: 

1. Stirring the colorant into the concrete mix itself 

This mixing technique is most commonly used in projects that desire one solid color. It works by mixing in a powdered pigment made up of inorganic minerals into the ready mix. This pigment is oftentimes made of chromium oxides and iron. 

2. Stamping the concrete

Concrete stamping, on the other hand, is used for projects that require special patterns or designs. This method involves layering colorant on top of fresh concrete then stamping it with texturing molds. This colorant is either made up of synthetic or natural pigments.

Synthetic pigments

Synthetic pigments are made up of metallic oxides and are created through industrial processes. During these processes, minerals (the raw material) are refined to change their physio-chemical properties.

These physio-chemical properties are what link each metallic oxide to their specific color. Cobalt oxide, for example, is a metallic oxide used to create blue concrete.

Natural pigments

Natural pigments are derived from mineral deposits, and like synthetic pigments, they’re made up of metallic oxides and hydroxides. Iron is most commonly used to apply this pigmentation.
